Frequently Asked Questions

Glide through your uncertainties with our crystal-clear answers

Like birds learning to fly, humans can embrace the ice at nearly any age! At Qixawoi, we welcome students as young as 4 years old for our specially designed "Tiny Gliders" program. That said, we've taught beginners well into their 70s—proving that ice dancing doesn't discriminate by birthdays. The perfect time to start is whenever your heart feels that pull toward the glistening surface. Our instructors adapt teaching methods to suit your age, physical condition, and learning style.

The journey to skating independence varies as widely as snowflakes—no two paths are identical. Most of our students find their "ice legs" within 3-5 lessons, able to glide forward and navigate basic turns without clinging to the rink's edge. More complex maneuvers, like crossovers or backward skating, typically bloom around the 8-12 lesson mark. Remember, skating mastery isn't a sprint—it's a beautiful, lifelong waltz with gravity and momentum. We encourage celebrating each milestone rather than rushing toward the finish line.

Fear of falling is to skaters what stage fright is to actors—completely natural and wonderfully conquerable! At Qixawoi, safety forms the bedrock of our teaching philosophy. Your first lesson will actually include learning the art of falling gracefully (yes, there is such a thing!) and getting back up confidently. We provide protective gear recommendations, teach proper posture that minimizes fall risks, and our instructors stay within arm's reach during your vulnerable early stages. Our progressive teaching method ensures you're never asked to attempt a skill before your body has built the foundation to support it. Remember: even Olympic champions visit the ice unexpectedly sometimes—it's simply part of the skater's journey.

This question mirrors the classic "rent or buy" housing dilemma, with similar considerations! For your first 3-5 lessons, renting makes perfect sense—it's your "try before you buy" period. Our rental skates are properly maintained and sufficient for beginners. However, once you've committed to the skating journey, personal skates become your wings. They mold to your feet, providing consistent support that accelerates your progress. Think of rental skates as borrowing someone else's running shoes—functional but never quite yours. For children who are still growing, we offer a unique trade-in program that makes ownership more economical. Our pro shop staff can provide personalized recommendations based on your foot structure, skating goals, and budget.

Dressing for the ice is a delicate balance between warmth and movement—think of yourself as a polar explorer who needs to dance! Layer like a poet crafts verses: a moisture-wicking base layer (synthetic or merino wool) to keep sweat at bay, an insulating middle layer that traps warmth without bulk, and a lightweight, flexible outer layer that allows your arms to swing freely. Avoid the cardinal skating sin of jeans, which restrict movement and become uncomfortably rigid when damp. Gloves are non-negotiable treasures for both warmth and hand protection during inevitable introductions to the ice. For children especially, waterproof snow pants offer both thermal protection and cushioning. Remember: you'll generate heat once moving, so dress slightly cooler than you think necessary—standing still in the perfect skating outfit should feel slightly chilly.

Your blades will whisper their needs if you learn to listen! The most telltale sign is when turns become unreliable companions—when edges that once gripped faithfully start to slip away like fair-weather friends. Run your protected fingernail gently perpendicular across the blade; a properly sharpened edge will subtly scrape your nail, while a dull one glides without resistance. Most recreational skaters need sharpening every 20-30 hours of ice time, though this varies based on your weight, skating style, and ice conditions. Hard stops, skating on improperly resurfaced ice, or walking on concrete without blade guards can dramatically shorten this timeline. We offer professional sharpening services with three hollow depth options to match your skating style—from deep hollows for precise figure work to shallow cuts for speedier hockey maneuvers.

Group and private lessons are different vehicles heading toward the same destination—skating proficiency—but they travel at different speeds and offer unique views along the way. Group lessons (6-8 students per instructor) create a social ecosystem where you'll find camaraderie, friendly competition, and the comfort of fellow beginners navigating the same slippery challenges. They're budget-friendly and follow a structured curriculum that builds skills sequentially. Private lessons, conversely, are precision instruments—every minute is tailored to your specific needs, learning style, and pace. Technical corrections happen immediately, accelerating progress for those with specific goals or timeline constraints. Many of our serious students choose a hybrid approach: group lessons for foundational skills and social enjoyment, supplemented with occasional private sessions to break through plateaus or refine specific techniques.

At Qixawoi, we embrace ice skating's magnificent diversity! Beyond our foundational curriculum, we offer specialized pathways for various skating disciplines that branch out like a frost pattern on glass. Our figure skating track progresses from basic edges to jumps and spins, with separate focuses on freestyle, moves-in-the-field, and interpretive skating. For hockey enthusiasts, we've developed power skating programs that emphasize explosiveness, agility, and game-specific maneuvers. Our ice dance program celebrates movement to music, from preliminary pattern dances to advanced international styles. We even offer niche specialties like synchronized skating and theater on ice for those drawn to skating's collaborative art forms. All specialized tracks require completion of our Level 3 basic skills program, ensuring students have the fundamental building blocks before constructing their specialized skating identity.

Life occasionally throws obstacles more slippery than ice in our paths! When you can't make a lesson, our 24-hour notification policy serves as your safety net. With advance notice, we happily reschedule private lessons without penalty or add a make-up class option for group lesson participants (to be used within the same 8-week session). For those sudden disruptions that prevent 24-hour notice, we offer one "emergency absence" per 8-week session that can be rescheduled without penalty. Beyond that, missed lessons without sufficient notice are like snowflakes that have already fallen—beautiful but unable to be preserved. We maintain this policy to respect our instructors' time while balancing compassion for our students' unpredictable lives. For long-term absences due to injury or special circumstances, our customer care team works individually with families to find fair solutions.

Competitive skating is where artistry meets athleticism in a dance choreographed by ambition! Our Competition Preparation Program is a comprehensive ecosystem designed to transform talented skaters into competition-ready performers. This elite track includes specialized coaching packages with increased ice time, dedicated program choreography by our award-winning staff, and strategic competition selection tailored to each athlete's development path. We incorporate off-ice training focused on jump technique, flexibility, and strength conditioning specific to your competitive needs. Perhaps most valuably, our competition prep includes mental performance coaching—teaching visualization techniques, performance anxiety management, and goal-setting strategies that separate champions from mere participants. We pride ourselves on our holistic approach that addresses not just technical elements but the entire competitive experience, from costume selection to understanding judges' preferences in program composition.

Conquering advanced jumps is like solving a physics equation with your body as the primary variable! Our approach breaks each jump into its component parts—entry, takeoff, rotation, air position, and landing—analyzing and refining each segment before reassembling the complete element. We employ progressive training methods including harness work for developing proper air position and rotation mechanics, off-ice training with rotation boards and jump simulators, and video analysis that compares your execution with technical models. Our unique "partial mastery" methodology ensures skaters fully own easier variations (half-rotation, single jumps) before attempting more difficult versions of the same jump family. For particularly challenging elements like the Axel or quad jumps, we incorporate specialized periodization training that systematically develops the specific strength, coordination and spatial awareness these jumps demand. Most importantly, we tailor jump development to each skater's physical attributes—what works for a compact, explosive athlete differs significantly from strategies for a taller, more elongated skater.

Choreography is where technical skating transcends into storytelling on ice! Our showcase choreography services transform skilled movements into meaningful performances that resonate with audiences and judges alike. Our choreography team includes former professional performers with backgrounds spanning classical ballet, contemporary dance, theater, and competitive skating—bringing diverse perspectives to your artistic vision. We begin with an in-depth consultation to understand your skating strengths, musical preferences, and the story you wish to convey. From there, we craft programs that strategically highlight your technical abilities while developing your unique artistic voice. Our choreography packages include music editing, program layout, detailed step sequences, and expressive movement training that teaches you to physically embody emotions and characters. For group showcases, we specialize in creating formations that maximize visual impact while accommodating skaters of varying abilities. Beyond creating the program, we provide interpretation coaching that elevates execution from mere reproduction to genuine artistic expression—teaching you not just where to move, but why each movement matters to your narrative.

Gliding Through Our Story

Welcome to Qixawoi, where blades meet ice and magic happens. Born from a passion for the graceful art of skating, our journey began when a group of competitive skaters decided to transform their love for ice into a teaching endeavor that would inspire generations.

Our studio wasn't built overnight. Like a perfect figure eight, we've carved our path gradually, refining our techniques and teaching methods with each passing season. From humble beginnings with just a handful of students practicing in early morning hours, we've grown into a vibrant community where both wobbly beginners and graceful experts find their rhythm on the ice.

What sets Qixawoi apart isn't just our technical expertise—it's our belief that skating is a dance with gravity, a conversation between balance and momentum. Every instructor at our academy has not only competed at respected levels but has also developed a unique teaching philosophy that adapts to each student's natural movement patterns.

"Our mission is to transform the cold, hard surface of ice into a canvas of possibility, where every student discovers their unique expression of movement, confidence, and joy."

Our Approach to Ice Mastery

At Qixawoi, we view skating not merely as a winter sport but as a year-round discipline that builds character as much as it hones physical prowess. Our curriculum blends classical techniques with innovative approaches, creating a learning environment where technical precision meets creative expression.

Each lesson at Qixawoi is a carefully orchestrated experience. We begin with the foundations—the whisper of the blade against ice, the subtle shift of weight that initiates movement. As students progress, we introduce them to the poetry of edges, the mathematics of spins, and the exhilaration of jumps. Through it all, we emphasize that falling is not failure but feedback—a necessary conversation between skater and ice.

Our classes cater to all ages and ability levels, from toddlers taking their first tentative steps to adults rediscovering childhood joys or pursuing competitive dreams. We offer specialized tracks in figure skating, ice dancing, and recreational skating, each guided by instructors who specialize in nurturing those particular skills.
